How long do I have to file an insurance claim after an accid

What is the time limit between an accident happening and filing an insurance claim? I know it's better to file a claim immediately, but if that's not possible, how long does one usually have to file a claim?

It may be a state by state issue. Here in Pa I've seen it vary by company

First or third party claim? First party ranges from asap (which is stated in the policy) to the statue of limitation for contracts in your state (might be 6 years). If the insurance company shows that the delay caused the damages to increase then they don't owe the difference. If they can show it caused them harm then they might not pay the claim. Third party claims are governed by the statute of limitations for that state and dependent on the type of claim.

Under such circumstances, it's very important that we read through the policy terms and conditions right at the very beginning. It's worse if we get confused while filing a claim.
