I am considering doing engineering consulting as an individual. I am a licensed chemical engineer. The type of work I would be doing would be related to wastewater engineering or reuse engineering. I may work under a contract with consulting firms where I have acquaintenances. What type of insurance would be appropriate?

You would need, at a minimum, professional liability insurance (AKA "Malpractice"). Beyond that, you may need a commercial general liability policy if any of your effort could result in some other form of liability (completed operations, personal injury, property damage, etc) not covered by the PL policy. Workers' compensation would be necessary if you have any employees, or if you choose to cover yourself voluntarily.

Your auto insurance might have to be upgraded to commercial use depending on what you do with it.
