Do I have to have insurance? My mother in law wants to put her van in my name do I have to have insurance on it before I can do this?

Most states will require you provide proof of insurance before they switch the title to your name.

I agree most states will require you to have insurance in order to switch a title over to your name. Why does your mother want to do this? If the title is in your name and something should happen to it, for example it gets stolen, you will be the one to be reimbursed. On the other hand if a crime was committed in the vehicle and it was in your name, it is you who would be the first suspect. I am not saying there will be any crimes committed; those are just the two most extreme cases I can think of.
