I am a foreign resident and I just purchased a vacation home in Florida.
I obtained a quote from an insurer whom I selected on the web.
Is there a way to find out if my to-be insurer is a reliable company with a good history of relations & claims from customers?

You can check the companies AMBest rating to see where they stand financially (keep in mind you are really looking for an A or better. This won't give you their customers service info. For that you could check some place like JDPower.com. However, I place little value on customer service ratings. They are usually bought in some way, are tainted and/or are simply a very limited snap shot of the service a company may or may not provide. Still better then nothing.

Yes, the companies have been rated by various rating agencies -
A.M. Best, Fitch, Moody's, Standard & Poor's
