Let us know how your quest turns out. I'd check behind the couch. Old people LOVE to hide money behind the couch!

There's no magic wand for finding money you didn't know existed, don't believe any lies to the contrary.
Is there a Will? Doesn't mean the money has to be paid, merely means that what she would have liked to have seen happen.
Life insurance? If you don't know about it this can be a royal pain to find. Not because the insurance company is trying to hide it, but because they won't know to pay until someone tells them, too. And if the policy is paid up, they won't come calling for premiums. You could do an MIB search. It costs money, has a low success rate (admitted from the MIB upfront), and is only really good for more recent insurance purchases.
You'd be wise to keep an eye on the mail. Look around the house maybe for something old. If there is no Will, then you'll have to petition the court for anything that is unclaimed and open the intestate estate. If there are any outstanding debtors (keep in mind medicaid is a debtor) then they have claim to the money over you.
