I'm aware that I need an SR-22 to be financially responsible before driving a car. How do I get it? How long does it take to get one?

To get an SR-22, contact insurance companies that provide SR-22 bonds and purchase a policy. The company will also give you the SR-22 form to be filled in and taken to the local DMV.
You should be able to obtain your SR 22 bond as soon as your first premium is paid to your insurance company.

SR-22 is a special certificate that serves as a proof of auto insurance. In certain cases DMV requires proof of insurance to be filed with them for you to keep your Drivers License valid.
The SR-22 form is given by your insurance company to be taken to DMV. If the insurance company files the form electronically, generally it takes a minimum of 2 days from the time the SR-22 is added to your policy.
If you want to quicken the process then you can personally take the SR-22 form to one of their offices and have them process it at the counter.
