As far as I think any car insurance policy should come with comprehensive/collision coverage.

On one hand the comprehensive coverage covers things like fire, theft, vandalism etc.

On the other hand, the collision coverage pays off, if your car gets hit by another, while being parked or on the go. Whereas a hit and run case can be covered by a UMI.

This is not vandalism, this is a collision.

Vandalism would cover losses along the lines of, for example, someone "keying" your car, slashing your tires, etc. This would be covered under what's known as "Other than Collision" or "Comprehensive" coverage. The terms are interchangeable- it depends on the terminology your insurer uses.

Your described loss would fall (typically) under "Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD)" coverage if the guy who hit you left the scene without supplying any information... a hit-and-run scenario. If you don't have UMPD, the only other coverage that would pay for this loss is if you have collision coverage on your policy.

Both UMPD and Collision carry a deductible.
