I’ve heard that there are various types of auto insurance discounts in the market that can be obtained. Can someone give me info on these discounts and how to get them?

As far as I know the insurance companies may provide certain discounts on your auto insurance costs, if you can take few steps to prove them that you are or can be a safe driver and less susceptible to road accidents.

One of the best ways to avail a discount is to have an impeccable tract record. If you have perfect driving record for past few years without any claims or any tickets, you prove yourself a safe driver and may have low premium rates.

Another way is to cut down mileage on your car. The lesser you drive the lesser are your chances of having an accident.

You may also get lower rates for having a good credit score or high college grades. A good credit score makes you seem to be a financially responsible and careful person. While for a youngster having good grades makes him appear to be more matured and less impulsive, even when driving is concerned.

Auto insurers usually give a discount if you buy a package of policies from them, i.e. homeowners and auto insurance.

You may also get a discount for taking up a certification course at a driving school.

If you are looking for discounts on auto insurance policies then you should have a good driving record and your vehicle should be in prime condition. There are so many factors which determine rates of insurance policy for your vehicle, and all these factors play a vital role to get discount rates for you.

I would focus on shopping with all the leading auto insurance companies to find the best price for you. Ask each company about what discounts they offer, and do everything you can to get all the discounts for which you qualify. Discounts will var by car insurance company.

Some discounts, like a low mileage discount, depend on your situation, which you may not be able to change easily. If you need to drive 15,000 miles a year, there is not too much you can do to get a low mileage discount, except stop driving your car.

Remember, the point of discounts is to get a low price. The best way to get a low price on auto insurance is to shop the market for the best price you can get for your auto insurance.

Don't file claims, keep a clean driving record, pay your bills on time to keep a good credit rating -- doing these things have a bigger impact on lowering your auto insurance rates than many discounts.

Insurance companies may offer discounts if you have multiple policies with them, such as auto and homeowners, or a business policy. Figure on about 10% for this.

Additional, but small, discounts may be available to school teachers/educators, lawyers, engineers, medical professionals (including therapists and nurses). Some colleges and universities also enter into marketing agreements to provide mailing lists to insurance companies in exchange for cash from the insurance company. If the company sells a few policies to some of the students/alums, it will easily recover its cost. These "professional" and "affinity" discounts in auto insurance amount to about 1% to 2% of the base policy.

Multi-car discounts will save 10%-15% on a single auto policy.

When all is said and done, don't expect all of your combined discounts to add to more than 25%-30% of the base premium. If your non-discounted premium is $1000 per year, don't expect discounts to bring it down to $500.
