What to do after a minor car accident?

I have just had a minor car accident yesterday. There's no great damage caused to either party's car. We exchanged our contact numbers and departed.
Now I'm thinking that if I find out later that my car is troubling because of the accident, would I get covered for my claims, if any?
Should I inform my insurance company about this accident. And if I do and I don't claim anything later, would my ratings go up just for having this lil accident? Is it also necessary to inform the police?
I can really get my car repaired for its small damages myself and I don't want my rates to go up or get a bad driver's record. I am very confused as this is my first accident ever. What do I do? Please Help!

You should inform your insurer or else they might deny your claim. Your rates should not go up for this.

They could if the OP was at fault.

Which is what I don't understand... if the other person was at fault then the OP could simply file a claim with the other parties carrier for the damage. As that is the case I don't see why the OP would be considering just paying for his/her own damage.

If the OP is at fault then the OP should report the claim to his/her own carrier as it appears that there is someone out there that has a loss the OP is responsible for.
