Diagonsed in Sept 2010 with R.A.
Unemployed in Dec 2010, (statrted collecting unemployment insurance).
Have suplimental disability insurance with Northwestern Mutual.
Applied for SS disability in Sept 2010.
Pending SS hearing, could be year away.
Should I transition to state disability in order to qualify for suplimental insurance?

You need to read your supplemental policy to see what it says about qualifying for benefits. It probably has nothing to do with being on "state disability".

I assume "R.A." means rheumatoid arthritis. A simple diagnosis of RA does not mean that you will qualify for Social Security Disability Income. The SSDI rules/definitions are extremely narrow . . . and, among other things (such as being disabled at least five "full months", having a disability that will last 12 months or longer or result in your death), you must be unable to perform "ANY SUBSTANTIAL GAINFUL ACTIVITY" which is anything in the entire US economy that, with your disability, can pay you $1000 per month in 2011. They do not take into account the fact that there is 9% unemployment in the economy, or that the work they believe you can perform is not available where you live.

By this statement, I assume you are still collecting on your 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. If this is true, you will not qualify for SSDI . . . to be unemployed means that you are capable of working and actively seeking work. That is 180 degrees opposite of what it takes to be disabled. (Or, if you are disabled, you cannot collect UI, and would have to repay all the UI benefits you received after being disabled.)

But your supplemental policy may be more liberal than this. So read the contract and determine what qualifies you to receive a payment.
