Your insurer gives you the depreciated amount after you can prove that you have done the repairs needed, thus you get the money. However you need to make payments in full to the contractor and thus you spend money first on the repairs and then get reimbursed for the repairs done. So, actually you don't get any money but only reimbursement for the repairs. That's what insurance does.
