Y MOHTER IN LAW PASSED AWAY 16 YEARS AGO. MY HUSBAND RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT HE IS ENTITLED TO BENEFICIARY AS HIS FATHER PASSED AWAY IN 1988. WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG FOR HIM TO BE CONTACTED? WE WILL NEED A CERTIFIED COPY OF DEATH CERTIFICATE OF FATHER.

It took so long, because may be, no one ever contacted the insurance company and informed them about the death of the insured. When you think you are the beneficiary to a life insurance policy, you are supposed to contact the insurer and file claim to get the benefits soon enough.
You will need to provide death certificates and all other documents needed by your insurer, in order to get the proceeds.
