I disagree with tcope's NO reply. Most states require formal notification of a collision involving property damages in excess of $500-$750 or when an injury or death resulted.
Additionally, when a vehicle is sold to salvage, the purchaser is required to notify the DMV as well. But you should also notify the DMV for the personal protection of having the VIN flagged as salvage. Otherwise out-of-circulation VIN #s have been know to be sold by/to unscrupulous persons in the auto dismantling and repair industries.
