DUI Question - Moving to a different state

I got a DUI back in 2007 in Montana. As far as I understand, Montana law has a section written in that prohibits insurance companies from using any traffic violation that happened more than 3 years ago to affect your rates.

I currently use Progressive. I am moving to Washington here shortly. My question is, how far back can companies in Washington look on your record? I have been quoted for full coverage (required to get a new policy when moving states) at about $85 a month for full coverage and a "gold" discount. So it would seem that they aren't likely seeing or using my 2007 DUI to affect my rates.

When I first used Progressive last October, I was upfront with my DUI, and my rate was something like $94 a month if I remember correctly. But in January (aka more than 3 years since my conviction) my rates dropped to $82 a month, and have since dropped to $77.

So long story short, I was just curious as to how insurance companies in Washington look at previous DUIs.

Insurance companies raise rates for a given period of time which gradually keeps reducing. Progressive reviews rates on a case-by-case basis and take into consideration a number of factors like gender, the kind of car you drive, your age and your overall driving record. In most states, insurance companies charge higher premiums for at least 3 years provided that you gather no further convictions since the last one and maintain an otherwise clean record. It’s always better to be upfront about things that can affect your rates rather than keeping them under wraps which might have adverse effects in the future.

There is nothing to prevent you from staying with Progressive in Washington state -- your driving record is what it is, and they are comfortable with it.

Washington auto insurance rates may be higher or lower than Montana -- that's just the effect of one state compared to another. Washington state's rates may actually be lower with more vehicles on the road to insure.
