I’m an international exchange student from India, here to study at Brown University. I am here on a student visa. Being a non-resident of the United States, is it possible for me to get a driving license as well as insurance for my car? I’m planning on buying a used Ford Focus.

Your best bet is to acquire an international driver’s license. You will need your original driver’s license from your home country as proof when you purchase the international license. The cost ranges between $40 and $90 depending on the term you are purchasing it for. You will need to carry both the licenses when you are driving. After you have acquired an international driver’s license, you can apply for auto insurance. Since the state DMV has no record of you as a driver, premium rates might be a little steep. Once you have lived and driven in the US for at least 3 years, your rates will reduce since you will have a substantial record with the DMV by then.
