Combining policy

I have been living with my girlfriend for a little over three years now. We drive different cars but we drive whichever one we feel like at the time. We are also listed under each other’s insurance policies as secondary drivers. I had a talk with my agent a couple of days ago and he told me that my premium rates would go down if I combine my policy with her policy. Does this mean that the overall premium rate will go up if either of us gets into an accident or gets a ticket? Will it reflect on our individual driving records?

Yes, it will definitely go up in case either you or your girlfriend gets into an accident. Combining individual policies into one joint policy makes both of you jointly liable for any incident that either of you may encounter. It won’t have a joint effect on your individual driving records though. Your driving record is maintained by the state which will record incidents on the at-fault party’s driving record.
