Will it be possible for me to cover my car with policies purchased from different insurance companies? I want general car insurance as I need to drive around town and I need insurance coverage for racing and sports related accidents since I use my car for sporting activities as well.

Yes, you need two policies. Your personal auto insurance policy will exclude coverage for sports use, such as racing, so you will need a separate insurance policy to cover your sporting activities.

However, if your personal auto insurance company knows you use your car in a sport, they may decline to insure you. Make sure, when you sign an insurance application, you are answering all questions accurately.

The best source of information for your situation may be a local independent insurance agent. Ask other people who participate in your sport who they insure with.

If your private passenger auto is used in any racing activities, it will likely be declined for coverage or, if not, all racing activities will be excluded from coverage.

Expect to pay considerably higher premiums either way.

As Robert stated above, your best course of action is to work with an experienced local broker/agent. And . . . regardless, BE SURE YOU READ YOUR CONTRACT once it arrives. Do not assume what the agent told you is correct. The policy could be issued "other than as applied for" and without prior knowledge of your agent.

Is there any policy out there which will give me 'full coverage'? I live in Utah, a few miles from the Bonneville flats and I take my car out for runs every other day. Other than that, the car either sits still in my garage or in the office parking lot. I spoke to an agent and he mentioned something about Motorsport Insurance. Any information on that? I just want a second opinion.

I would recommend getting a second, & third & fourth opinion from a few more local agents. They can let you know about rates, coverage options, limitations & exclusions.

Robert and Max both mention that you would have a hard time finding a personal auto insurance policy to cover your car. Since you mention that you spend most of your time racing on the salt flats, it’s a good idea to talk to your agent about motor sport insurance. There are a few companies out there which do provide coverage for racing activities. There are a lot of exclusions though. You need to prepare a comprehensive record of every maintenance and augmentation work performed on the vehicle starting from the date of purchase. Racing car insurance is expensive business and you need to prove to the insurance company that your vehicle is in top notch condition and has always been so.

In your case, it is important to look for a separate plan for normal driving, as you are using car in racing so some of the companies will not offer a on road plan as chances of damage to car are frequent in races.

MOST insurers will refuse to cover you for your on-road driving. You can either seek racing insurance OR you can look into general auto insurance. The most comprehensive solution is to go for motorsport insurance. Companies offering motorsport insurance usually provide you with limited on-road coverage as well as full sporting coverage.
