I left home on a business trip and of course I left the car keys with my wife. My wife is listed under our auto insurance policy so I didn’t give it much thought. Our son got hold of the keys (without my wife’s knowledge) and took the car on a joyride. He rear ended another vehicle but the damage was extremely minor. My wife rushed to the scene after my son called her and she managed to get the plate number and a few other details of the car. No information was exchanged formally and there wasn’t any police report filed either. The other vehicle had a couple of scratches below the tail light and drove off almost as soon as my wife arrived on the scene. Our car has a small dent in the door which is next to negligible. Would it matter if we don’t report it to our insurance company? In case the driver of the other car tries to sue us, will it help if we file the claim now?

Any accident should immediately be reported to you insurance company. In this case, you claim might be denied since an unlisted uninsured driver was driving the vehicle. Does your son have a driver's license?
The other party might just have got the same details off your car that your wife got off of their car. They could just as well file a hit-and-run case against you if they want.
