I am writing an article on ice dam removal and how most insurance companies handle these types of claims. Is there any policy out there that would cover the removal costs of an ice dam atop a single family home? Must the home have a "problem" (i.e., leakage) before insurance company would pay to remove it? Most insurance companies I've come across don't pay for any of the ice dam and/or roof snow removal costs. Some pay for only the portion of the ice dam that appears to be causing the leakage. Other insurance companies foot the bill to the have the entire roof cleared of snow and ice. It's a very confusing topic that I'd like to help shed some light on. Any help would be hugely appreciated! I'll make sure and use your name in the article (unless you'd prefer I didn't - your choice). Thanks a million! Joe

I'm not sure which insurers would specifically include coverage for ice dams under their homeowners policies. An HO3 or a HO5 policy seems to be the most appropriate. If you want specific information I suggest that you talk to an agent and find out. Agents will have a better bearing on the subject.

I guess I thought there were insurance agents on this website that might be able to better answer this question. No?
