As long as the policy is in force at the time of death. Someone needs to be paying the premiums.

Is the policy in force? If so simply send the insurance company the death certificate and they'll cut a check to the beneficiary(ies).

Yes it is. Look for exclusions on the policy though; if it’s a fairly simple, traditional one, like [Link removed as per TOU], there's no reason to believe that the beneficiaries won't be able to collect on it.
