Yes definitely. You always have the right to search for an insurance policy, which you can afford to pay regularly.

I believe the OP was asking about insurance alternatives compared to that which is made available by her employer.
A person is free to obtain coverage on their own and forgo their employer's group coverage. The "new laws" will not be in effect until at least 1-1-2014, if at all. Certain limited provisions have been implemented to date.
When comparing coverage, price is not the issue, what is and is not covered is the most important thing to consider. Usually, but not always, group insurance provides a higher level of benefits at lower cost.
