Both bodily injury and medpay covers injuries, then where lies the difference between the two?

Med pay is for occupants of an insured's own vehicle (or the one he is driving) -- including insured persons such as other named drivers or members of the household. Depending on state law, med pay is either primary/supplementary (pays in addition to other coverage) or secondary (i.e., "excess coverage").

Bodily injury covers injuries only to third parties and not to anyone directly insured or an immediate family/household member.

The two are not the same.

Here are some examples.

(A) I'm driving around town. I park my car and as i (or one of my passengers) get out of the vehicle, I step into a pothole and break my ankle. Med pay will apply to that loss.

(B)(1) I'm driving around town and am involved in a collision with another vehicle -- I am at fault. My med pay will apply to my (and my passengers') injuries, but not to anyone in the other vehicle. My bodily injury coverage applies to those other persons, as well as to unrelated passengers in my own vehicle.

(B)(2) I'm driving around town and am involved in a collision with another vehicle -- that driver is at fault. I can collect under both my med pay and the other driver's bodily injury liability coverage.

(C) I'm sitting in my front yard when a vehicle leaves the roadway and collide with me. I cannot claim anything against my med pay -- I was not driving (or in contact with) my covered auto. My injuries are compensable under the other driver's bodily injury liability coverage.
