If I move out of state for an uncertain time period, say for 6 to 8 months or max 1 year, do I need to change my license, tags and insurance? Will my existing policy not offer the coverage? It's up for renewal within 2 months. Should I let it continue?

Your vehicle registration may remain unchanged until it is due for renewal, if you are intending to be a temporary guest of the state. Your out of state Driver License probably needs to be surrendered and replaced with the in state license. That's no big deal unless you have problems with your out of state license (like you owe back child support, or have traffic warrants out for your arrest).
Your existing insurance will provide coverage until its expiration date, but then would most likely have to be replaced with local coverage.
It's best to do everything by the book. There may be a small inconvenience in terms of paying registration fees and paying for a new DL, but doing it right saves a lot of trouble that ignoring the matter could cause. Talk to a local agent or broker about this.

Usually a state requires that a vehicle be registered in that state is it will remain there 30 days or longer or the person obtains employment in that state.
Your drivers license is usually the same.
