Hello everyone. This is my time posting on the forum. I'm dealing with an aggravating situation involving an atypical accident scenario and there seems to be quite a few knowledgeable people here who may know what to do in a situation like mine. Any help would be moooost appreciated.
So this is what's happening: My girlfriend was driving my car home from work last night and someone entered her lane sideswiping the driver's side wheel wells and both doors. Now there is a long but shallow (in most parts) scrape all across the side of my car. Somehow the front left wheel/rim/tire/axle? were also damaged. The driver that did this drove away. Long story short- she pulled over. The guy that was behind her pulled over to "help". He helped her put on the doughnut tire and poorly advised her to just drive home. I know. Ridiculous. Even worse is the fact that in her shocked state and lack of experience in such matters, she followed this idiot's advice and wobbled my car home-back to a fuuuuurious me. I have good comprehensive insurance with state farm and a totally accident free/clean driving record. I own the car outright. But what on earth do I do here? What a tiny nightmare..... any help would be incredible. Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure what the real choices are for you or how this involves insurance. If you have collision coverage or uninsured-motorist property damage, you can file a claim under your own policy to have the insurance pay for the damage less your deductible. If you don't have that coverage, you will need to address the damage on your own.
Again, I'm not sure why this is confusing.

My confusion stems from the fact that I am hearing from friends and family that because she left the scene and did not immediately notify the police or obtain a proper accident report, my insurance company will not cover anything. Is this a common misconception then? That would be good news indeed. Again thank you for your swift response. I am unfortunately an insurance illiterate. Working on it though...

Your friends don't have a clue and are 100% incorrect.
