I am in the market for a new car. Not sure what the make and model will be. Will the dealer provide 30-days of insurance coverage at the time of purchase?

The dealer may or may not have some type of auto insurance offer for you, temporary or otherwise, but I think it's best for you to shop for, and set up your own auto insurance, if you don't already have a policy.

Once you have the VIN (vehicle identification number) for the new car, you can contact insurance companies or agents to discuss coverage and get accurate price quotes. If you have an auto insurance policy for any other cars you own, contact your agent for advice about the new car purchase.

No. You will need to obtain your own insurance prior to driving the vehicle off the lot.

If this is the case, your existing insurance will apply for a few days if adding a new vehicle, and several days longer if replacing one. But you must contact the insurance company as soon as possible to change your insurance to reflect the actual situation, or risk not being insured.

As tcope has said, car dealers are not in the business of providing free insurance. State laws prohibit this. The dealer can connect you with an insurance company, the lender will "force-place" insurance, or you can obtain it on your own, which is the preferred method.

As much as you might be tempted to do so, don't drive the vehicle off the lot without coverage in effect.
