What penalty should an uninsured driver face?

Recently I was involved in an accident. The person at fault was ticketed for running a stop sign and also for not having auto insurance. My vehicle was declared totaled by my insurance company and we settled for a price that is less the deductible. The person who was at fault chose not to have any insurance on it and drove in a reckless manner. But because of this I have to pay for the deductible. The insurance company would certainly try to set up a repayment for their loss on the vehicle and my deductible. Odds of them getting any money from the uninsured person is slim and none.

If any person causes any accident and is found devoid of any valid insurance, why aren’t they get arrested and placed behind bars … only released when the amount (repair+deductible) is paid in full!! All these actually hurt the people who drive with proper credentials.

1) How would they earn money to pay back the loss if they are in prison?

2) On top of your deductible are you then going to pay higher taxes to house all of these people in prison? If you are going to imprison people who don't pay for insurance and are fair with sentencing, your state prison is going to need to house a few hundred thousand people.

The list goes on and on for reason's why this is not done.

The reason wny not is that no legislature has decided that failure to purchase auto insurance is a criminal offense. We already don't have room for all the violent offenders, and you want to put insurance scofflaws in custody, too. Maybe all the states can come together and buy Nevada and turn it into one big prison.

Actually, to some, freedom means being able to drive without license or insurance. They see these limits as restricting their freedom that the constitution gave them.

I remember the days when auto insurance was not mandatory. People assumed personal risk and liability in accidents themselves. Now people saying that the government is pushing insurance down their throats.

Should auto insurance be made mandatory? What others have to say?

Excuse me? Haven't you heard? Auto insurance IS mandatory is all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

Making it mandatory has not resulted in 100% of drivers or vehicle owners purchasing insurance. It is the reason why many of us continue to pay for uninsured motorist protection, and the reason why auto insurance rates have never been reduced as a result of the "mandatory" laws that we were told were going to do just that. "When everyone has insurance, the cost of insurance will come down." BS then, BS now.

So let's turn to the latest "mandatory" insurance scheme: Obamacare. People were promised that they would save hundreds of dollars per year ("$2500 for a family of four"). And what are people seeing in these days of "Open Enrollment"? Even the government has officially said that after ten years of this junk, there will still be 20,000,000 or more uninsured people in America. Where is the "mandatory"? And why will there be so many uninsured people? Is this not a clue that the program's design is all wrong?

In the next ten years, we, as a nation, will throw several trillion dollars into a massive new, government-created sinkhole in the form of higher insurance premiums, higher taxes, higher inflation, and higher government spending. With what result? 20,000,000+ uninsured people in a country that REQUIRES EVERYONE to have health insurance.

Mandatory is not mandatory when there is no true penalty for failure to comply. Hasn't worked in auto insurance, and it will never work in health insurance. The wrong solution never produces the right result.
