: My car is an ecomonic total loss yet drivable. The damage is front bumper airbag.I have sentimental attachment. I am undecided on whether to salvage or take buy out. Adjuster says I have 1 year to decide claim. I want time to be clear on my decision. I want take car to my house. I can get estimates.I can shop for replacement with value of buyout or salvage then decide best deal. Ultimately if i salvage I would use money to buy best car and park sentimental one until I can fix one day. Does it make sense? Is insurance company giving truth on time limit? I want to take 3 months to decide. California

I have no idea why any adjuster would allow a 1st party claim to sit around for months or years. If I were that adjuster and the person did not know, I'd give them a week to decided and if I did not hear anything I'd simply issue the payment less the salvage value and be done with it. If the person did not want to keep the car then they could sell it for the salvage value. I'm betting the adjuster does not allow the claim to sit for a year and perhaps only a month or so. But I don't know for sure.

Frankly, it should not take 3 months to make up your mind. If it does, then you are simply procrastinating. I understand you want to obtain some information first but this really should only take a couple of weeks. Personally, I think if you were planning on letting it sit around and repairing it later that it will never happen.

My recommendation... get the info you need and make up your mind within 2 weeks.

Like Tcope said you can take all the time you want to decide however, the adjuster more than likely will issue you payment minus salvage value and depending on how your policy contract is written will cancel the rental car 72-96 hours after a payment was made therefore no rental car. ( Mind you this depends on the state and policy language )
