total loss payment made in my name

My vehicle total loss by insurance and they sent a check from ers made out to my name and did not indicate lien holder. I am not eligible for vehicle do to amount owed and I am currently still making my financed payments. I used the money to repair another vehicle so I would have transportation. do I have to give to car finance . I was just contacted . I ask insurance company in beginning concerning in the beginning and they stated it would be sent to lein holder which it was not. my debt is 14,000 with car finance and insurance only covered 10,000. my credit is bad, I have had to pay for rental car because I was not covered. I have no intention to stop paying car note I have automatic coming out of my account. I just can not afford a down payment on a car.
