Is it the CAR or the DRIVER that is insured???

Hi everyone! It's nice to find you guys! :D

I live in Michigan, and my question is in regards to Auto Insurance. I have been told that in Michigan, the Law says that it is the AUTO that is insured, NOT the person or persons driving it...which in essence means that anyone who drives the vehicle is automatically insured. All Carriers that I have contacted ask "how many in the household will be driving the vehicle, and what are their ages?" When I tell them about my child being a new driver (16 w/permit) they tell me that once she has her license the rates are going to go up sky high! If this makes sense to anyone (my post), could someone please enlighten me as to whether or not any of this is true?!?!

Thanks Again for any help!

Both students had liability only

Well, at least this is true. It makes little difference that no one was cited, each insurance company will gather its own facts and determine if their insured is at fault, and if so, to what degree, If the other driver is found to be at fault, that liability policy will cover some or all of the damages to the vehicle your daughter was driving. If the vehicle had been covered for collision, you could have used that coverage to pay the claim, and let the insurance company work for a recovery from the other insurer.

If your daughter would normally be a resident of your household, except for the fact she is away at school, she can still be carried under your auto policy. If you're trying to do this "insurance thing" on your own via the internet, take a deep breath . . . and now go find a local agent or broker to help you determine your insurance needs and obtain the proper coverage and the right price.
