Hi..I'm from Canberra but currently am touring Asia. I've come to know about something called a pvt. Health policy. Is it a mandatory to have such an insurance ? If I intend to have it….does it all depend on my income ? But I don't think I'd be able to gain out of my Medicare in case I opt for this policy..am I right ? regards, Reese_Galloway

My friend, lemme just assure you that it completely depends on your personal opinion whether you would like to go about this Pvt. Health insurance thing!

Lemme also tell you that even if you wish to go for this one, you may carry on with your existing Medicare policy or the public hospital facility as per your need. This happens since you'd always remain a public patient under all circumstances. Thank you for joining the forums!
Take care, Fatman

Hi Reese!

First of all let me wish you a wonderful tour ahead!

Yeah, I agree to the fact that its your personal decision after all. But yeah, you need to pay for what is levied by the Taxation Office. If you own a medicare & earn more than $50,000 yearly as an individual OR say you earn more than $100,000 as a family, then in that case you would be required to pay for the Medicare Levy which constitutes 1% of what you earn. That's precisely all I've gotta say! D Ryan

Well, yes I'd rather agree to what D. Ryan has suggested over here only that you also ought to remember that this family earnings have to be commensurate with the $1500 worth of yearly contribution from your side for every child that you bear following your first one. Thanks to all, Juanita
