My grandfather has mental illness and each mo it cost me huge for his medical checkup and medicine. Is there ay insurance policy available in the market. My Grandfather is 65 yrs old.

Most non-group policies won't cover pre-existing conditions. But yes... almost all health insurance polices extend benefits for Mental Health related treatment. It's usually confined to xx number of visits per year.
He's not covered under Medicare (disabled)?

Hi Mitthi,
Some states run Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). This program offers several medical benefits to people who are above 60 years of age. Mental health illness and substance abuses are also covered under this program. You can search for such program in your state.

Is your grandfather a member of a senior citizens' group, like AARP?? I would think that coverage might be available through something like that.

Your grandfather qualifies for Medicare/Medicaid.
My oldest son is mentally ill, and I got him on, first Medicaid, then he is now on Medicae. They also have a state run insurance for people on these ,to be offered insurance too, and according to income, it's free or little cost.
I would first check with your Doctor. They are they important ones in getting someone on these programs.
If he, at 65, isn't alraedy on Medicare, he is eligible in alot of states.
Also, check with your local Department of Human Services, they can get him a case worker and they will help with the papers.
There is no reason he should not be elegible for Medicare or Medicaid..If you need more answers, please let me know, and I will share some of the stepewe went through..Good Luck..KAren :D

Mental illness is a real tough situation. Let me address a couple of things.
Bossy...sorry to bring this up, but your reply made a few assumptions that could easily mislead. Let me clarify...
Medicaid is a state-run program financed in part through the federal government. Medicaid is a program that provides benefits for individuals over age 65, without assets of sufficient income to afford expenses not covered by Medicare, as well as persons of any age that are deemed "categorically needy." Examples would include aid to dependent children and families, disabled individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the feds, medically needy children, etc. It's help for the "economically challenged" so to speak.
The OP mentioned nothing about assets or lack thereof, even though she said that it has cost her a lot of $$$.
If the OP could give us his state of residence, I would be more than happy to point him in the right directions!

I don't know if the OP is "economically challenged" or not, just giving an experience I had. I also work for the Dept. for Mental Health.
I am just saying, that there is no reason for anyone who has a mental illness not to be receiving some form of disability, if that is what is interfering with life, work, etc.
It cost me $$$ too, until my son was officially diagnosed, and told he would never work again, thus leading him to Medicare- no work no money.
There are too many "helping" agencies out today, that no one should have to suffer and go through what they are going through financially or otherwise..Karen
