Hi All! I am planning to rent a car for the coming vacations. Do I need to have separate insurance for the rented car? I've heard something called ‘nonowners insurance'. Can someone throw some light upon it?

Hi there, you have heard right. You can purchase ‘nonowners insurance' on the rented car. Nonowner liability insurance is for those who do not own cars but rent vehicles very often. If you are in a habit of renting cars on a regular basis, nonowners insurance sounds to be the right option for you. But one thing you need to keep in mind that it only offers the liability coverage.

I don't think that it is that easy a call. You can buy 'nonowners insurance' if you rent a car very often or borrow other's car to drive. In that case if you maintain 'nonowners insurance' that will offer you the coverage through out the year. It is also economic because it reduces the cost of buying renter's insurance every time you take a lease. You can enjoy the coverage with a mere expense of $200-$300 a year. But if you do not rent very frequently then you can consider having a rental car insurance rather then investing on ‘nonowners insurance'.
Take care,

Yeah right, you really need to consider the options that you have in your hand before you settle down for one. I just want to touch upon few points which may help you to make a decision.
The conventional automobile insurance normally extends the collision and comprehensive coverage to the rented vehicles also. Therefore, if you already have the auto insurance you may not require purchasing an extra coverage for the rented car.
If you don't have the regular auto insurance, you can opt for Rental car counter insurance. It is more comprehensive and offers a wider range of benefits. Rental car insurance offers a package of the following coverages:
One last word of caution, check with your credit card company, before committing yourself to buy the rental insurance from the car company because at times the credit card company offers collision coverage to the rented cars.
