Do you have insurance advice?

I recently lost my job due to layoffs. I am now staying at home with my 15 month old and we (my husband, my baby, and myself) do not have any insurance. Our insurance was through my job. We can't afford to do the Cobra Insurance - it is almost 1000.00 a month!

Do you have any advice on affordable insurance plans?

Are you wanting low cost health insurance for all three of you or just your baby? If you are looking for just your baby there may be programs in your state that you may be eligible for. I know in California there is Healthy Families and also a kids health plan through Kaiser Permanente.

I understand that your premiums have now risen since you now have to spend for the entire amount of premium. So for the time you need to look for a short term health insurance plan till the point of time you find a job!
Believe me, these short term plans may help you sustain your coverage under your previous employer till the point of time you find another job. This could be done till 18 months with the support of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA). Hope you got that! Fatman

Hi yeah!
What you need to know is that Cobra is not any insurance plan nor any insurance company. Cobra is an act which supports & guides unemployed people to avail the option of utilizing the same old health insurance benefits till they find a new earning opportunity! The short term policies they are talking about would cover you from hazards like surgery, hospital attention, emergency services, medical diagnosis, prescribed drugs, post-service attention, office visits!

I know in our state, there is a Womens' and Childrens' program. You can get forumula heath needs met, etc., Check with your local health department also and see what they have to offer. I am betting every state has a state funded type of help ,especially for babies.

Good Luck to you!! Let us know what happens..KAren :D

This is an unfortunate situation for thousands of Americans just like you. As stated earlier your baby can probably qualify for benefits in your state. As far as the adults go, you will just have to shop for insurance. Your best best is for one of you to go to work and get benefits. If yall decide not to work then you may consider a company such as assurant health. They have some low cost plans sometimes cheaper than employers.
