I have a car in California that i only occasionally drive, but i want to keep it insured. I only need it for a few weeks a year but i need insurance to keep the tags valid. Is there any kind of occasional driving insurance?

Hey you!
Why don't you shed off your liabilityncollisions from this car? It would certainly help you save some bucks especially during the colder months.
I'm sure you're gonna find a temporary or any 'other-than-collision' coverage for this one. I hope this one is quite an older chap, isn't it!
Thanks for joining us, Fatman

hi yeah...I'd like to remind you of those hundreds who believe in storage facilities at times...why don't you go for a storage policy! I'm sure thats an option to consider given your conditions..but yeah, you need to ensure that you'd be permitted to drive it at times.

Hi levkurb, no temporary/occasional insurance is available in USA. You need to maintain coverage through out the year on your auto in order to maintain the tag. However, you can budget with the coverage. As you drive your car occasionally you can drop or rather lower the collision coverage on your car. Additionally, you can also reduce the level of liability coverage on it (or maintain the minimum level). It will help you to stay insured and at the same time will reduce your expenses on it.

Good morning levkurb,
Contact your agent or the policy services dept of your insurance company. You don't say how you define ''occasional'' . If months pass, between driving it and parking it, or if you know (for instance) it will set Nov.Dec.and Jan. you will drive in Feb.March, then back parked a few months (see the point?). See if you would qualify for some 'sleeping' or garaged coverage. What this means is you will absolutley not be driving certain times, and can therefore drop all coverages but comprehensive. And the when it 'awakes' or you are ready to drive again, all your coverages are back, (as are the premiums).
However if you mean by ''occasional'' that you drive two days a month. You will not qualify for storage or sleeping coverage. The easiest (and usually best) way to reduce premium is to raise your deductible for collision and comprehensive. If you deductibles are 250, and you can afford it should a loss occur, raise it to 500 or 1000.00. Another thought is the vehicle is old and not worth much, consider dropping the collision and comp. coverages all together. However this wouldn't be possible if you have a lienholder on this vehicle.
If you will define 'occassional' and let us know, year, make, model, perhaps we can be of greater assistance.

I'm sorry you did define 'occasional' as a few weeks a year! For sure contact your agent and inquire about storage, or sleeping coverage, as I explained. So sorry I missed that !!!!!!

Some carriers (perhaps very few) will ask how many miles you drive the vehicle per year (I know USAA does). I can't say that it lowers the premium by a whole lot, though
