I just got my life and health license . I have an art program that I take to different pre schools every day for one hour. I was wondering if I could get the permission from the schools to talk to parents about the importance of life insurance ? Do you think if this is a good way to maket life insurance?
Thank you for your time. This is my first post. I like your web site very much.

Hello everyone. I also applaud Ins. Maze and Knig 188's suggestions. We do, however, live in a society literally besieged with scandal and ill-intent. Thus, everyone, especially parents, have learned to keep their guard up 24/7.

I have been working with literally hundreds of school districts over the past 5 or 6 years on the Americo 403(b) fraud case and have learned how they think. Although I think your intentions are good, I suspect you'll run into conflict with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”).

I would surprised if any school organization gave you any information whatsoever, or authorized you to solicit information to their clients. Can you imagine the liability the schools would incur if you weren't honest and trustworthy?

I would suggest you make contact with the parents on an individual basis, by any means available, and leave the school (and school-related activities) out of it completely.

Because you are new to the insurance industry, I would hate to see you get a "black eye" so early in your career.

By the way, which company have you chosen to work for?

I wish you much success in the future.
Mark

Thank you Mark. I knew I have to be very careful and let all parents know that there is no relationship what so ever between my services and the schools. Any way this was an important question for me and that is why I wanted to see if any body there could have an answer for me.

Now I have been searching different companies, I am new and it is difficult to trust any one of them. I live in Atlanta, and I am a follower of Clark Howard, the famous consumer advocate. I would like to be alien with him. For instance he only recommend Term insurance. So among all these companies so far I have found John Hancock. I have tried to buy term insurance for my husband with them, and I realized the companies they go with, and the pricing is the same as Clark Howard's web site.

Now since I love what I do with my art program and I would like to keep it, John Hancock suggests I become an independent broker and then use their products. Of course they have told me that they will train me as well. It is hard as I have no experience and being an independent broker, right when I just got my life and health license is like being in an ocean not knowing where should I go.

I am glad I found this web site. It looks like a nice community. I would appreciate your information.

Thank You
May

Hello again May,
I was actually a bit concerned that some of the other members, whom I consider my friends, would want to slap my hands with a ruler for not being more supportive of you. Unfortunately, the insurance industry is no longer the happy-go-lucky environment once enjoyed by the debit-agents of olden days.

For 14 years, I have worked very hard to support the good agents and admonish the other ones. I've sued insurance companies for more the $1/4 of a Billion - with a "B"- and seen the licenses of 13 agents permanently revoked.

A few years ago, I was asked to speak to several graduating classes of new agents in CA. This was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've been an agent for many years and been part of the MDRT 6 times. I know how to sell insurance and can you believe; I've never worked for a company that supplied leads? I always done it the old fashioned way by making friends with my clients, always asking for referals, prospecting 24/7, and providing the best customer service I possibly could. I know there are agents reading this who remember those days. My hat is off to you all.

JH has a pretty good training program and you might be wise to stick with them for a while. A broker's life for someone who doesn't yet have a firm grasp on the system can be a treacherous road to travel alone. On the other hand, AIG has a term plan with an ROP (return of premium) rider that will practically sell itself. I would strongly suggest that you not become a "term"-ite and sell only that type of insurance. Develope a broad base for your company and be able to offer anything your clients need. Good luck, Mark

Commendable effort from all of you guys. Its really great to see how you all have come forward to help the young agent. All these small things actually make this world a better place to live. I was, in fact, feeling proud while reading through your posts that I am a part of the community which cares so much for each other.

I wish you all the luck and success May. And hope that we'll hear more from you in the future as well. It'll be a great pleasure for us to see you participating and lending your helping hand to others who are in need. Best of Luck.

Regards,
Juanita
