Why buy? to protect yourself from paying for the damages if the car gets hit.

Rental car insurance will keep you covered when you are driving a rented vehicle. Normally, you auto insurance coverage also applies to the rented car but if it doesn't then the rental insurance will protect you from paying the high cost repair bills that you may require to pay at the event of an accident.

Hi caplibro, if I'd been in your place I would have asked ‘why shouldn't I buy renter's insurance?' because

More often than not they are way too expensive. It may cost you $10-$17 per day depending upon the car.

Your auto insurance coverage (collision and comprehensive) normally applies to the renter cars too (get it clarified from your agent).

Non-owner car insurance may offer you the same coverage of the renter's car insurance. And its more economic if you have to rent quite frequently.

I would say the answer to

what are the reason to buy rental car inssurance?

Is HUGE profits to the rental car company. If you have collision and comprehensive coverage on your vehicle then in most cases this exact coverage including your deductibles follow to the rental vehicle. ALWAYS make sure of this first. Some of the rental insurance is not insurance at all but a ''damage waiver'' which picks up your deductible. And your policy is going to pay primary regardless of what you buy from them (assuming it qualifies as a temporary replacement vehicle).... Frankly I think it's a big, bad scam IF your own coverages follow to the rental vehicle.

Now if you do not have your own, or only have liability with no collision and comp coverage then the rental car company will INSIST you take theirs out anyway, with good reason.

More often than not they are way too expensive. It may cost you $10-$17 per day depending upon the car.

Are you kidding me? Not too expensive? Lemon must be rich! That's (at 17.00) $510.00 a month! or $6120.00 per year! Who pays that much for auto insurance on one car? It's horrifically over priced...in my (not so) humble opinion...

We rented a car for a week to drive out to colorado, they wanted our car insurance information, we had and have good insurance. What surprised me was that they would not accept certain insurance companies, they quoted some of the fast, easy to get, low priced insurance companies that you see advertised on television. I found this surprising cause I would assume that if you were covered it would not matter to them if their car was covered too by you driving it.

When renting a car, you need insurance. If you have adequate insurance on your own car, including collision and comprehensive, this may be enough.

Before you rent the car you should contact your insurance company. Your own car insurance should apply to the rental car, providing you are going to use it for pleasure. You need to have comprehensive and collision coverage on your car to be sure the rental will be covered if stolen or damaged in an accident. IF your policy doesn't cover a rental car you have two options - to purchase coverage at the counter or to get a non-owner auto liability policy.

Having insurance also keeps you on the laws good side. As many people have learned the hard way, not having proof of insurance can net you a nasty fine.

Your auto insurance might cover rental cars as well, but it's best to have something that will work, just to be on the safe side.
