The U.S Congress established the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) with the passage of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968. The NFIP is a federal program enabling property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance as protection against flood losses in exchange for State and community floodplain management regulations that reduce future flood damages.

You can find more information from fema on the link I provided.

Yes, one can buy the flood insurance, if required, directly from FEMA. And one can also purchase the flood insurance from the local agents as well.

Hey, your flood insurance premium will depend upon the geographic location of your residence. If you are living in the coastal areas, you are required to pay higher premium for the insurance. You can insure the building and its contents for the highest level of coverage available for around $5,000 a year. Therefore, you need to find out the exact positioning of your property in the Flood Map available at the department of FEMA. Hope you find this information helpful.

Why don't you want to go to a private carrier, if they offer it and you can add it on to your other homeowner insurance wouldn't it be cheaper to get it all from the same company?

NO !!! Hummingbird the peril of FLOOD IS NEVER COVERED in a HO policy!!! neither is earthquake! (few others too but you CAN get coverage for these two by either adding to your ho, or buying a flood policy)

I don't have it and don't know why I would even consider purchasing it because I don't live in a flood zone, and I am on a hill, the town is below me, so to me this would just be an extra unnecessary bill that I would not want to pay.

I tend to agree with Goodnatureds thinking. Where I live the ground is like walking on a sponge from all the rain we have had all winter but flood? No it has never flooded here and isn't likely ,so I will save myself that cost.
