This question is in regard to out-of-state insurance. I'm a resident of Florida. I'm currently a student at a school in Tennessee with no way to apply for residency without a permanent address(I live in a dorm). My fiance, on the other hand, is a resident of Tennessee. I will be buying a car within the next couple weeks as my previous one has been totalled. If I need the car immediately, and am not going to be applying for TN residency for another 3 months, what would be the best course of action for gaining insurance? Here are some things we thought about:
1. Have her buy the car under her name, and let her insure the car (would that allow me to be insured under her policy?)
2. Buy the car under my name, get a Florida tag, and keep my parents' insurance until we are married.
I can include any other information as needed. Thanks!

I wouldn't advise buying the car under her name. If you switch it eventually, you may have to pay sales tax again *yuck*
Buy it under your name and just use the address your currently at and can receive mail. It should really be that simple. Insurance isn't that complicated and I'm sure they will help you along and make the transition go smoothly.
You could always proposition your parents as it would be cheaper, thats for sure. Good luck!

Have you asked your existing insurance carrier about covering you in Tennessee?
