Compulsory Auto Insurance
The minimum amount of auto liability insurance that meets a state law. Financial responsibility laws in every state require all automobile drivers to show proof, after an accident, of their ability to pay damages up to the state minimum. In compulsory liability states this proof, which is usually in the form of an insurance policy, is required before you can legally drive a car.

Most states do not require liability insurance to drive a car on private land or if you leave the state. If your car is registered in Idaho and want to drive in Wisconsin, since Wisconsin has no mand auto insurance law, you do not need insurance in Wisconsin. If your Idaho registered car is driven in Montana, you also do not need insurance since Montana exempts Idaho cars if they are in compliance with Idaho law. (Idaho does not require Idaho cars to carry insurance in Montana.

Mmm......curious baout something, EVAN. As ya know, some ADS on TV talk about Geico, AIG, etc. They say they will give you the "minimum coverage that your state requires." Is THIS what you mean by Compulsory Insurance? Liability?

I'm sorry Don, those states may not have ''insurance'' requirements but they DO HAVE financial responsiblity laws, and also when driving a vehicle into another state your vehicle (you) must conform to those state laws.

Depends on your definition of 'on' your policy. If you both reside in the same household she will likely be required to be a listed driver unless you exclude her.

If your wife will not drive that car, she can be excluded. Mandatory means you have to have insurance if you DRIVE the car, not that everyone should have car insurance.
