coverage after 18

I live in oregon my son is 18 and has moved to minot North Dakata. I requested to remove form my health insurance and they told me I could not until he was 19 unless I could show proof that he was insured else where. Is this a new law because what I understand in that if your child is 18 and out of the house not enrolled in school you could not cover your childs benefits???

You placed this in the auto form.

Who is this health insurance through? An employer or did you get it yourself? Who told you that you could not remove your son? Was this an agent for the insurance company?

The insurance is through an employer and the company's benefit dept told me that the child would have to stay on and would automatically be removed when they turn 19

I'm guessing you are paying a premium for this person? If so, you need to call back and confirm this information. Ask for something in witting from this person confirming that they are requiring you to pay for dependent health insurance and that they will not let you remove this dependent. I'm betting they change their position on the matter.

I don't know much about health insurance but I'm betting you cannot be required to carry health on a dependent if you don't want to. Only thing I can think of is some policy on changing coverage midway through the plan. I'd think this would apply to adding coverage, not removing it.

Please send me a link that shows in the Oregon state insurance laws that this is true..all my findings contradict this statement! This is the reply that I sent a couple days ago and have not heard any reply. I have an email that states the following:

Our benefit administrator researched this and found that this is not a qualifying life event to remove him from the plan. She can remove him if he now has his own coverage through another source and can provide proof. If he does not have new coverage, he will have to wait until he is 19 to be removed from the benefits.

The email they sent prior to my reply is:
