Do I have grounds for appeal?

Recently my wife and I had a baby, which our obstitrictian was "in-network," but our hospital (the only hospital that the in-network obstitrictian delivers at) was "out-of-network." All of this came to light when we recieved the bill. The cost difference is 20% of the bill.
What can I do?

Talk to your health insurance carrier and explain the situation. You can appeal it. It might do good or it might not - but can't hurt. It is strange that an in network doctor only delivers at an out of network hospital. Did you know which hospital the delivery was taking place in ahead of time? Did the delivery or stay have to be pre-authorized? This is where this should have been caught by someone. In the future, which you may have expensively learned, you need to check facilities as well as doctors prior to having service. Lets hope they do the nice thing and cover it as in network.
