Why is it that "basic" insurance only covers fire and lightning? Why is wind, hail, etc considered to be "broad" coverage? Does that mean that fire & lightning losses are the most likely to occur?

They used to refer to these as 'dwelling/fire' policys...I'm not sure if they are more common, but they are certainly (generally) more devastitating. A broader form provides more perils.

That is incorrect Basillex. The "basic", or Form 1, policy covers much more than just fire & lightning, it covers direct loss from:
1. Fire or Lighining
2. Windstorm or Hail
3. Explosion
4. Riot/Civil Commotion
5. Aircraft
6. Vehicles
7. Smoke
8. Vandalism or Malicious Mischief
The additional coverages on the "broad", or Form 2 policy are: Burglars, Falling Objects, Weight of Ice, snow or sleet, Collapse, Sudden/accidental discharge of water from a plumbing, heating, cooling, sprinkler or other system or appliance and Freezing.
