Hi. My home was damaged in a storm, and I want to do the work myself. My insurance company sent me a check to do repairs, but they held back a portion of what I am entitled to. The portion they held back was for "depreciation". They say I can recover the money as long as I send in reciepts for the repairs completed within 2 years. How can I recover this money if I'm doing the work myself?

Photos of the repaired damage and receipts for the materials.

I just finish handling a case like yours and tcope is correct. Send your adjuster copies of your receipts once you purchase the materials for the repairs.
Are you a licensed contractor?
If you are a licensed contractor create a detailed estimate and forward that to your adjusters as well.
Keep a log of how many hours it take for your to complete the job.
Then once you complete the work send them a statement of completion along with your request for depreciation.
Best Wishes!

I have been with bajaj Allinaz for last 2 yrs. in Depreciation, some part of claim amt. is held back. this is the std. process of claim settlement. reason, though, you have paid the premium amt. againt the insurace policy still, you have some responsibility and liability towards your property. so, to know you the responsibility that depreciation amt. is held back. And remember that insurance is not meant for profit (benefit) rather it is to help you stand back to the previous finacial position.
