My apartment unit just caught on fire yesterday, and only the entire kitchen burned down, everything else is covered with soot, and there are couple smoke damages on the wall. I don't think my family bought the renter's insurance. But the landlord, who owns my apartment unit and many other, has insurance. If the insurance company decides the fire is my fault, they'll fix everything first and then ask me for money. But will I be allowed to hire people to install a new kitchen and restore everything myself without going through the home fire insurance company? I know it costs a lot more to have the insurance company to restore everything. Please provide me as much info as possible. I am in a rather desperate situation.

My home caught fire when I was yopung with a 2 yr old. It was caused by fauklty wiring .I had already been trying to tell the land lady that there was a problem with the wring but she was cheap and would not listen.I awoke one morning to smoke coming from the fuse box in the kitchen. When you sat on the sofa the lamp beside it went off. The overhead light cause snow on the tv. The land lady was aware of all these things. When it caught fire I was not home it started in the plug beside the couch where the lamp was. She tried to say I left matches on the couch .Then she said I left my Xmas tree lights on.As it turned out I was not covered.I had no renters insurance and it only paid for her damages and I was left with no recourse. I lost a lot.It is a bad situation.

I am glad you do, Lori. :D Honestly speaking I just love babies myself. And you know what, all my colleagues in my workplace call me a "baby" (though I am not one)
Thanks,
Andy

hummingbird, this is a bad situation, but
As it turned out I was not covered.I had no renters insurance and it only paid for her damages
It wouldn't have mattered who were at fault, her dwelling policy wouldn't have covered your personal property...You could've (maybe) taken her to small claims court in an attempt to prove negligence on her part (knowing of a hazard and not addressing it)...but more than likely would've been her word against yours, and thus a draw....terrible life leason to learn (needing renters policy) but fortunately you and your child were not injured in this fire! And you know what, all my colleagues in my workplace call me a "baby" (though I am not one)
That's funny....you must be the youngest at work then huh?Pagination
