Flood Insurance denotes the specific insurance coverage against property loss from flooding. Insurer will often refer to topographical maps that denote lowlands, floodplains and floodways that are susceptible to flooding.

Actually, in the US, flood prone areas have been identified by FEMA and are not subject to insurance company determinations. A property is either in a flood zone which requires a NFIP policy in the event of flood or not.
However, regardless of where a property is situated, a "flood" is still a "flood" and one does not have to be in a flood zone to experience a "flood". As a result, about 25% of all floods occur in areas NOT identified as a FEMA flood zone. Without a NFIP policy, a standard homeowner's policy still provides no coverage outside a flood zone.
