Truck insurance : Is it different from car insurance

We're using a couple of trucks for our business. We'd be grateful if someone can tell us the differences between a commercial truck insurance and a commercial car insurance. Are these truck insurance policies really good for us?

Really depends on the kinds of trucks. Commercial coverage is definitely different than personal lines insurance coverage in a number of different ways, primarily in that personal lines insurance is NOT for what are called "commercial insurance" exposures.

Just about all personal lines policies will exclude coverage for business use, as these exposures need business auto insurance coverage. If you could tell us (1) what kind of vehicles you have (specifically), (2) what kind of business you're in, and (3) how they are used it would give us a little more insight as to what's going on.

We then might be able to help you some more.

We're into transportation of goods. Our trucks are used to deliver goods and equipments to our clients' addresses.

Commercial insurance doesn't differentiate between cars and trucks in the pure sense...you need to make sure that the business vehicles are covered properly, whether they're cars or trucks makes no huge difference.

The difference is you're covered or you're not. As well, personal policies won't cover any of your business personal property while being shipped or transported- you need specific coverage for this.

You really need to talk to an agent who knows his stuff regarding commercial auto coverage. That's NOT a Farmers, Allstate or State Farm agent- they don't write commercial auto. You'll need an independent agent or one that specifically works with a commercial carrier.

Commercial policies are a bit different than that of the personal policies. The coverage limits, exclusions and other terms and conditions may vary depending on the policy types apart from the types of vehicles.

Commercial car insurance policies are good enough to cover cars or even trucks. They'd also cover large tractor-trailers with even 18 wheels.

There are some trucks that are used for long-distance transportation of cargoes. It's good for such trucks to have commercial truck insurance in place.

There are a lot of factors that need to be considered in order to arrive at the cost of such insurance-

* The nature of business
* The type of cargoes
* How old the equipments are
* The distance that needs to be covered
