Can you be covered with a suspended license.

My license is suspended until next year and my current carrier is dropping me because of that. I need to continue coverage somehow to avoid fines from the finance company and/or DMV. Is there any way to do this?

No carrier should offer you insurance as there is no risk they are insuring. It would not be a legal contract unless there was compensation for something.

There should be no "fines" from the finance company or DMV. You simply either need to turn in your tags or someone else needs to insure the vehicle. This other person would need to have some type of interest in the vehicle though.

I'm guessing you want a way to obtain insurance so that you can keep he tags on the vehicle and drive anyway. You've already dug yourself into a hole... getting caught doing this is only going to make the hole very much deeper (as in your licenses suspended for _several_ years and _very large_ fines).

The insurer would drop you since they don't want to get burned. Also, if you try to purchase coverage with another insurance company they would also come to know about the suspension fast since DMV records are easily accessible for them.

However, the state laws also have a lot to do with it. Can you let us know where you are from?

Thank you for responses. I am a Nevada resident, to answer Jeremy's question. To answer tcope's question...I do not have anyone else here with an interest in the vehicle to insure it under. I am upside-down in the car with a pretty hefty monthly payment so selling it isn't really an option either. To be honest, yes I do plan on driving. I know it is not a wise choice on my part but I live nowhere near a bus line and can't afford to take a cab to and from work each day. None of my friends live in my area and I have no family here either. I am willing to take the risk on getting caught with the suspended but I do not want to drive without insurance because that (in my opinion) could be far more disastrous. Just wondering if maybe anyone here had any ideas. Thank you again for your earlier replys.

Yeah, didn't see that coming. At least your being honest about it here. Let me be honest as well. I pretty much figured this was the case as I've handled _tons_ of claims where people with suspended licenses caused accidents. Licenses are not suspended at the drop of the hat. A person needs to do something _seriously_ wrong and probably more then a few times in order for their license to be suspended. So why do you think you are going to get away with driving without one? Trust me, eventually your going to get caught. Then your going to have a _huge_ fine (one that you probably won't be able to pay), your car will be towed and you will need to pay the towing and storage on it (you probably won't be able to afford that so it will be repo'ed), and your license will be suspended for _several_ years. If you ever get your license back your insurance premiums are going to be too much for you to afford. On top of all this and your upside down on your car loan which means you've already dug yourself into a hole before all of this.

Trust me on this one... you are _deep_ in a hole, you keep digging yourself deeper and you have no problem continuing to dig. That is, you're just making your life even worse with every decision you make.

My recommendation is to ask the court for a hardship license that would allow you to drive to work and that is about all.

Next recommendation, get rid of the car you paid too much for and start making payments on an old beater. You will be paying through the nose as you will still owe something on the old car but you need to start taking actions to move yourself in the right direction.

Hi Btick, IMO you are taking too much risk. Hope you have sound reasons for that. But as Tcope has mentioned the consequences of driving under suspended license can be severe..

Anyway, in some states you could get access to restricted license which would allow you to drive between work and home. However, you need to serve half of the suspension period before becoming eligible for it. You may check whether its allowed in NV.

Btw, what was the reason for suspension?

I'd suggest you to contact an agent. Some insurer may still insure you.

I dont know about where you are, Nevada right?, or why your license is suspended, but here in NY you can actually get your license suspended but still have it for certain things, such as to get to work. It is a restricted license and if you are caught driving for any other reason then what you have the restricted license for you are in really big trouble. As I said this may not be an option in your case, but may be something to check into, it may help.

Im pretty sure that if you have your license suspended then you cannot get insurance.

You cannot get insurance w/o a active DL. The contract would not be legal as the there is no service provided for the premium as the person cannot legally drive. If the policy was written, the carrier would knowingly be issuing a policy giving coverage to someone who can only drive illegally.

Your vehicle can be covered on a policy as long as your not a driver. You can't drive a car until you get your drivers license back and you can not be an insured driver because of this. I would call an agent and find out the laws in your state to be exact. I can see why you would want to keep coverage on the vehicle even though you can't drive it. Keep in mind that driving while your license suspended is a crime and can result in jail time along with many other fines and penalties. In Texas, driving while license is suspended is the same class crime as a DWI. I know this was the case a few years back, so I assume the penalties are still the same. Either way, the fines are stiff so don't drive under any circumstance.
