Does any one know the significance of having Pork and Kraut for new years, we have always done this and I have never questioned the meaning behind it, LOL. Just wondering if anyone knows.

Andy some people think that you need to eat certain things on the first day of the new year for good luck/health whatever....Apparently goodnatured has heard of eating Pork and Kraut but didn't know the significance of it...as I said my grandma's (actually it was her mother that insisted on it and was very superstious) that you MUST at some point on Jan 1st eat black eyed peas for good luck...think that one is pretty common and most people have heard of that...I've even seen cans of blackeyed peas on graves the first of the year!  So she was wondering if anyone else had any new year traditions, about eating certain things and what their significance was....

A little late with this one. Pork and kraut is a German/Dutch New Years Tradition. It is said that a pig is a sign of going forward because on their eating habits. Kraut is a form of cabbage which symbolizes wealth. Come over to the debt forum. All the foodies are over there. We have Pork and Kraut every New Years. My mother was of Dutch and Germa extraction
