Health insurance for pregnancy?

hey guys..

..is there any good insurance that would cover for the medical bills during a pregnancy period?

Otherwise it might just be too much for me to pay for the expenses associated with my delivery, regular visits to the doc etc.

It would be hard for me to get it like others since I'm self employed.
Though it would take me some time to get pregnant, still I thought it would be the right time to inquire once I've come across this forum.

Hello.Welcome to 'our' Forum. Good to have ya here!! :D You might look into Blue Cross/Blue Shield, etc.....that kind of thing. However....I think ALOT of the Heath Insurances have some kind of 'waiting period' about the pregnancy issue. Just to give you alittle of my 'personal experience'. When I was pregnant, I had ACCESS through the DPW. Depending on your income, you may 'qualify'. OR...........if 'worse comes to worse', if you can't pay Medical Bills, there is a program (can't remember what the name is, though) that is 'associated' through several hospitals. It's a 'Hardship' kind of thing. If you can't pay medical bills, you can apply for this program (show proof of income, etc) and you will pay NOTHING or LITTLE to NOTHING. I used this program, myself, on a few Dr's visits, Emergency Room visits, etc. You may ask you local hospital what you can do.

I know the program you are speaking of SD. SOme hopsitols call it Hillburton and others call it I-care. There are also some state sponsored programs that will give you coverage even if you do not meet low income guidelines. Here in PA its called the Adult Basic program. My mother is on it and she pays a monthly fee. Its one of the best coverages but you will have to pay if you do not fall into a low income bracket. On herself she was paying a little over $100 monthly but the covergae was pretty good.

Hi!

I've not really known too many health insurance policies to cover for pregnancy. If you're younger and have a sound health then I guess you may come a cross a couple of them who'd agree to cover your pregnancy.

Even for that I'm sure you'd need to apply nine months in advance.

I don't think any body would ever cover you once you've conceived. In order to be sure that you're covered, I'd suggest you to apply for it right now so that you may conceive safely by the next year.

I'd never let my company know that I'm getting pregnant..would suggest the same for you!
In case you find that paying for insurance is seemingly costlier, you may go for any medical discount plan. This way you would be able to cover your monthly medical expenses with around $30 only!

Some hospitals offer the "Stork plan." A flat fee to cover your expenses. It might be available in your state.

The real reason for purchasing Health Insurance is to protect the newborn upon birth in the event the newborn is premature or a sick baby. The cost of prenatal care and delivery would most likely be minimal compared to the expenses that could be incurred by an infant. Complications of pregnancy can add up quickly and are many times covered even if your Health Plan does not include maternity coverage. The newborn on the other hand could be insured if Either parent has a Health Policy at the time of birth and the child is added to that Policy within 30 days of birth.

The Hospital Pre Paid Delivery Plans are Great and will save you a lot of money but do not protect the newborn. Check Out some of your local HMO's some offer full maternity coverage after 12 months. Meaning you could conceive after being insured for approx three to four months and have full coverage, provided you carry the child for nine months.

Remember you or the legal father can add the newborn to their Health Policy effective at birth if added within 30 days of birth. Protect the Newborn.

In my state (Connecticut) Anthem Blue Cross and Connecticare have plans that cover pregnancy. There are no long waiting periods. However you have to conceive after your effective date.
