In case I'll go work aboard for half a year or a year, am I allowed to suspend car insurance and reinstate it when I am back? Thanks.

Wouldnt cancelling and then re-establishing the policy be the best route?
I've never heard of suspending auto insurance, only that you may suspend car insurance policies :P
Really though, give them a call.

I believe you can suspend car insurance over here, but I'm not certain how long.

I cancelled mine for a year and when I went to get a new policy every quote was twice as high as what I had been paying. It was their way of getting their money back that they lost from me as a customer. Crooks.

You can do that but I think it's done automatically through your auto insurer if it has electronic reporting system.
Check with your insurer and ask them.

Most insurance companies do offer the option to suspend auto insurance coverage. However, it does depend on your insurance carrier, the state in which you live in, and the amount of days that you will be away.
There IS a difference between cancelling auto coverage and suspending coverage. When you cancel your policy, you have absolutely no coverage. When suspending a vehicle, most insurance companies will only apply comprehensive coverage (meaning you are covered for things such as theft, fire, vandalism, hail). With coverage suspension, since you are only carrying comprehensive coverage, the insurance premium is really low (typically around $20 per month).
In most states, if you go 30 days without any insurance, it is considered a "lapse in coverage" and therefore when you try to get coverage again, your rates will be quite high (usually it's almost double your previous premium). Please note that having suspended coverage is different from having no insurance since you have comprehensive coverage included when a vehicle is suspended. Also note that with suspension, you do not have liability coverage (in other words, you are not covered for accidents) so please DO NOT operate the vehicle if the coverages are suspended. With suspensions, you are able to reinstate coverage (when you get back from your trip, you can reinstate your full coverage and be covered if an accident were to occur).
I'm an insurance agent in Texas and with my current company, we do not offer coverage suspension in this state. On the contrary, my previous company did offer suspension on the basis that the insured had to be away for more than 30 days. So suspensions depend on your insurer, state, and the length of time that you will be away

It does depend on the state and insurance company. The best way to find out would be to ask the local DMV, they would give the proper information on the required action.

Every licensed driver in every state is required to provide "proof of financial responsibility" when operating a motor vehicle on the public highways. If you don't own a vehicle, you may obtain "non-owned auto" coverage to meet your financial responsibility requirement.
